Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM)
NAM's mission is to sustainably (People, Planet, Profit) prospect for and produce oil and gas from deposits within the Netherlands and the Dutch section of the Continental Shelf. Following the discovery of an oil field near Schoonebeek in 1943 by Exploratie Nederland, a Shell company, Shell and Esso decided to put up the capital jointly for a new oil exploration and production company: Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij, or NAM for short. NAM was formed on 19 September 1947. It's logo represents the five cutters in a drill bit, seen from below.
Development
NAM made the first natural gas discovery in the Netherlands in Coevorden in 1948. Just over ten years later, in 1959, NAM discovered the famous Groningen gas field near Slochteren, one of the biggest in the world, with original producible gas reserves of around 2,700 billion m³. That discovery also opened the door to offshore gas exploration and production, and in 1961 NAM was the first company in Western Europe to drill for gas in the North Sea.
Today
NAM is now the largest gas producer in the Netherlands, with annual production of around 50 billion m³. 70 % of gas (37 billion m³) comes from the Groningen field and the rest from various smaller fields elsewhere on the mainland and in the North Sea (15 billion m³). Gas produced by NAM covers around 75% of Dutch demand. NAM also continues to produce oil , around 0.3 million m³ a year. NAM accounts for just a fifth of the oil produced in the Netherlands (1,6 million m³).
Future
NAM is working for the future. A good example is the underground gas storage facilities that NAM has constructed at Langelo and Grijpskerk, which enable us to meet demand even on the coldest days. Meanwhile, the search for new gas fields in the Netherlands and under the North Sea continues. On the basis of the currently proven reserves, NAM estimates that the Netherlands still has enough gas for about 25 years - depending, of course, on the rate of consumption. |
Engie E&P
GDF SUEZ E&P Nederland B.V. locates natural gas and oil, brings it to the surface and brings it on land via the offshore pipeline systems of Noordgastransport B.V. and NOGAT B.V. Aside from the production, transportation, and treatment of the natural gas and oil extracted from the Dutch continental shelf, these latter two companies are also responsible for the transportation and treatment of natural gas that is found on the English, Danish, and German continental shelf. |
Noordgastransport
With an extensive transportation system for natural gas on the Dutch continental shelf and a gas treatment station in Uithuizen, Noordgastransport B.V. (NGT) processes and supplies a substantial portion of the natural gas that is extracted from the Dutch continental shelf and beyond. After treatment, the gas is delivered to the pipeline network of Gas Transport Services B.V., which manages the national gas transportation network.
In total Noordgastransport B.V. manages approximately 470 kilometers of pipelines with a daily gas transportation capacity of approximately 42 million Nm3. The company plays an important role in the delivery of natural gas that is used both in and outside the Netherlands. |
NOGAT
Since 1992, NOGAT B.V. (Northern Offshore Gas Transport) has been transporting gas from various locations on the Dutch sector of the North Sea via its own subsea pipeline system, to the onshore gas treatment station in Den Helder. The pipeline system runs via a 24" pipeline from production platform F3-FB in block F3 to platform L2-FA in block L2. From there, the natural gas is transported further via a 36" pipeline to the gas treatment station in Den Helder, where the gas is brought to specification.
The pipeline system on the Danish continental shelf is connected to the NOGAT pipeline system via the Tyra West - F3 pipeline. This 100-kilometer long natural gas subsea pipeline connects the Danish continental shelf with the Dutch continental shelf, thus facilitating the export of Danish gas to North-West Europe.
Also the pipeline system on the German continental shelf is connected to the NOGAT pipeline system, by means of the A6-F3 connection. This 20" subsea pipeline has a total length of 118 kilometers. |

After treatment, the gas flows through a network of pipelines to GasTerra (the former Gasunie Trade & Supply) onshore. The offshore production centres are located between 80 and 150 kilometres northwest of Den Helder. The Central Control Room in the head office in The Hague monitors the process of all the installations and is manned 24 hours a day. Helicopters and supply vessels are used to transport personnel and goods.
